Timeline:
February 26, 2012:
- Trayvon Martin, age 17, is murdered by George Zimmerman, after a trip to the convenience store to buy a drink and skittles
Effect:The Black Lives Matter movement officially starts when Zimmerman is acquitted of murdering Martin.
November 23, 2012:
-Jordan Davis, age 17, who stopped at a gas station to buy sweets and cigarettes with friends, is murdered by a white man, Michael Dunn, who fired 10 shots after a verbal argument about the volume of the tennagers' music
Effect: Davis' death is the focus of the documentary film, 3 1/2 Minutes and becomes part of the national conversation about the dangers facing young black men in America.
November 3, 2013:
-Renisha McBride, a 19 year old African American female, is murdered by Theodore Wafer, a white man, after knocking on his door after being involved in a car crash in Detroit, Michigan. Wafer shoots her through the door.
Effect: The case initially stirs racial tensions because Wafer is white and McBride is black. Her supporters rally in Detroit after her death and online activists launch a campaign for justice.
July 17, 2014:
-Eric Garner, a 43 year old African American father, is murdered by NY PD officer ,Daniel Pantaleo , after being put into a chokehold on the side of the road in Staten Island by the officer. Garner continuously gasped for air and repeated the phrase “I can’t breathe”, all which was captured on film.
Effect: The phrase “I can’t breathe” has become a key part in the BLM movement...Protests erupt in New York after a grand jury fails to indict the officer.
August 9, 2014:
-Michael Brown, an unarmed teenager, is murdered by Officer Daren Wilson, outside an apartment complex in Ferguson, Missouri.
Effect: Missouri declares a state of emergency after violent protests.
November 23, 2014:
-Tamir Rice, a 12 year old boy, is killed by police officer, Timothy Loehmann, who shot the little boy, after Rice was seen carrying a toy gun in Cleveland, Ohio.
Effect: The Cleveland grand jury does not bring charges against the officers.
April 12, 2015:
-Freddie Gray, age 25, is arrested by police in Baltimore, Maryland, for possessing an illegal switchblade, while in police custody, after requests for his inhaler were denied, and after not being restrained, he falls into a coma. Due to injuries on his spinal cord, he dies on April 19.
Effect: Rioting and looting takes place in the Baltimore streets, the National Guard is later dispatched to restore order.
July 10, 2015:
-Sandra Bland, a 28 year old African American female, is pulled over for a minor traffic violation. On July 13th in Texas, Bland was found hanged while in police custody.
Effect: Protests against her arrest, disputing her cause of death, which was ruled a "suicide". The hashtag "if I die in police custody I did not commit suicide", is the result of her death.
November 16, 2015:
-Jamar Clark, a 24 year old African American male, is shot in the head by police while handcuffed in Minneapolis.
Effect: The BLM movement is outside the Fourth Precinct police station protesting for 18 days. The police officers responsible for the death of Clark, have no charges brought against them.
July 5, 2016:
-Anton Sterling, a 37 year old father, is pinned down to the ground by police and shot 5 times at close range, by police outside a convenience store in Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Effect: Protests occur in Baton Rouge after the video of Sterling's murder is released.
